Ganaru, journalist, referee attacked in Shagamu

By Taofeek Babalola

There was pandemonium at the Shagamu Stadium on Sunday during Remo Stars 2-1 win over Wikki Tourists in the match day 15 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as the visitors’ head coach Mohammed Baba Ganaru, center referee and a sports journalist, Kelvin Ekerete were allegedly attacked by the home fans.

The home team got the first goal through Victor Chinedu before Jonathan Richard scored the equalizer for the Big Elephants.

Remo Stars scored the second goal in a controversial circumstances via penalty. The penalty call was protested by the Wikki Tourists players but at the end the penalty was played and scored by Victor Mbaoma.

The game was marred with series of harassment, chaos and intimidation before, during and after the match.

However, a sport journalist, Kelvin Ekerete was also rough-handled by the fans and his mobile phone was snatched from him and he was left with blooded nose.

Kelvin’s undoing was his audacity to film the harassment on the match officials and the visitors.

In a telephone conversation with Sportinglens.blogspot.com, Ganaru said the referee lost the control of the match after he was attacked and intimidated, which pressured him to award a dubious penalty to satisfy the angry home fans.

“We lost the match through a dubious penalty. The officiating was very bad. There were lots of intimidation and the atmosphere was so bad for a football game. The fans attacked me and the center referee when we were going to the dressing room at half time. Our chairman was harassed and our cameraman was attacked too. And
to my surprise. He gave a very dubious penalty to Remo Stars,” Ganaru told Sportinglens.blogspot.com.

“Lmc is doing everything to make our league great but some of the referee are not doing well. Every week you must have complain about the officiating. We played with only one ball in the last 20 minutes. What I am appealing for is that LMC should study the tape of the match, we cannot continue like this if we want our league to be among the best in the world. We are on our way to Akure because we can’t stay here because of our safety,” he said.
