Rivers United FC duo of goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai and defender Ifeanyi Anaemena have been handed an indefinite suspension for unethical and unprofessional sportsman conduct.
According to a release signed by the club’s General Manager, Okey
Kpalukwu, the indefinite suspension takes immediate effect pending the outcome
of an investigation on the matter.
The fast experienced players joined the Port Harcourt-based outfit
at the beginning of the current season from Enyimba International FC of Aba in
a million naira deals.
Afelokhai spent five years with the People's Elephant after joining the Aba side from Kano Pillars in December 2015 while Anaemena ends a six-year association with Enyimba having joined the Aba Elephants from Giwa FC in 2014.
Afelokhai and Anaemena were regular players in the Stanley Eguma
tutored side both in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and CAF
Confederation Cup.
Rivers United failed to progress to the group stage of CAF
Confederations Cup after losing 5-4 on penalties to their fierce rivals, Enyimba
International in the playoff clash after the first and second legs had ended
1-1 on aggregate.
The club’s woes continued on Sunday when they suffered a 3-0
defeat to Akwa United in the NPFL clash in Uyo.
