Former
International Austin Okocha has attributed Super Eagles’ win over Iceland to
coach Gernot Rohr’s tactical genius.
Two goals
from Ahmed Musa earned Nigeria a 2-0 victory over Iceland in their World Cup encounter
in Volgograd and Nigeria moved up to second in Group D.
Rohr made
three changes to the squad that suffered a 2-0 defeat to Croatia in the first
game last Saturday.
The
Franco-German tactician included Kenneth Omeruo (who came on for Shehu Musa) in
a three-man defense which included Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun, while Ahmed
Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho were in the attack to replace Odion Ighalo and Alex
Iwobi who started in the game against Croatia.
Victor Moses
played as a right wing back, while Mikel was used as a defensive midfielder
against his previous position as an offensive midfielder.
Okocha
commended Rohr for listening to criticism and made right decision that gave his
team a deserved victory.
“I was a
little bit nervous in the first half but the boys improved in the second half
and they deserved to win today. Credit to the manager because he changed the
game plan. It is rare to see a manager that will listen to criticism and change
his ways when things are not going according to plans. Credit to him, he did a
very good job, and of course, credit to the boys for the win,” Okocha
said.
