Coach Gernot
Rohr was pleased with his side’s all-round performance against Iceland in the
FIFA World Cup second Group D game on Friday, insisting that the Super Eagles
deserved their 2-0 win.
Leicester
striker Ahmed Musa scored both goals as Super Eagles had to avoid defeat in
Volgograd yesterday to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Musa broke
the deadlock early in the second half with a fine finish following a move on
the counter-attack after receiving a pull-out from Victor Moses. The former
Kano Pillars striker doubled Nigeria's lead after bursting into box and taking
the ball round the Iceland goalkeeper, Hannes Thor Halldorsson.
The
Franco-German coach stressed that his side played better than their last game
against Croatia. “Iceland is a very good team, very strong and very organized
but I think in the second half we deserved the victory,” Rohr said.
“We had
set-pieces problems but we worked very much on it since the last game against
Croatia. Today we came on with Kenneth Omeruo who is very strong in the air and
we had our three central defenders. They worked very well and looked better
today, while Victor Moses had more impact in the right side. In the second
half, Tyronne Ebuehi brought some speed. It thinks we were the better team.”
The result
has set up an exciting end to the group as Nigeria are on three points with
Iceland and Argentina both on one point, with all three teams having a chance
to progress to the next round.
