Victor
Osimhen inspired Nigeria to a 4-2 win over Lesotho in a Group L 2021 Africa Cup
of Nations (Afcon) qualifier at the Setsoto Stadium on Sunday.
The Lille
forward scored a brace and registered two assists as the Super Eagles came from
behind for the second game in succession, to claim all three points.
Victory
moves Gernot Rohr’s men three points clear of Benin who beat Sierra Leone 1-0
in Porto-Novo earlier today.
Likuena
opened the scoring in Maseru after just 13 minutes as Nkoto Masoabi rose above
his marker before nodding home past Daniel Akpeyi in the Nigerian goal.
Osimhen,
though, would take the game by the scruff of its neck; teeing up Alex Iwobi and
Samuel Chukwueze within the space of 10 first-half minutes as the Super Eagles
carried a narrow lead into the break.
The forward
doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 75th minute, striking home from an Ola Aina cross
before completing his brace nine minutes later.
Chidozie
Awaziem netted a late own goal as Lesotho managed some consolation late on, but
in all it was a convincing victory for Nigeria who continue their qualifying
campaign at home to Sierra Leone next August. Lesotho’s third round clash will
be away to Benin in nine months time.
