The organisers of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have directed Abia Warriors, Kano Pillars and Barau FC to carry out urgent upgrades to the stadium facilities or risk being forced to play their matches at alternative grounds.
The league
body said Umuahia Township Stadium and Sani Abacha Stadium have failed to meet
minimum club licensing infrastructure standards.
According
to the league organizers, the pitch of the Umuahia Township Stadium, home
ground of Abia Warriors FC, is unfit and below acceptable television broadcast
standards due to poor maintenance of its playing surface.
The league
body directed Abia Warriors to take immediate steps to provide a properly
maintained playing surface suitable for top-flight football, installation of a
standard floodlighting required for evening fixtures and broadcast quality and
put in place adequate, modern dressing room facilities for players and
officials.
In the same
vein, Kano Pillars and Barau FC have also been directed to upgrade the Sani Abacha
Stadium. The NPFL said the pitch and dressing room need an upgrade.
The body
said several key issues were identified during the inspections of the stadium,
including; Poorly maintained pitch, deemed below broadcast standards,
unconducive dressing rooms for players and officials, substandard technical
benches and lack of standard floodlight facilities.
Both
Kano-based clubs have been directed to carry out urgent upgrades to the stadium
facilities or risk being forced to play their matches at an alternative ground.
The NPFL
stressed that maintaining quality infrastructure is crucial for player safety,
fair competition, and the overall growth of the league.
The NPFL
sent out these directives after matchday one of the 2025/2026 had shown lapses
from the clubs in club licensing regulations.
