Remo Stars kicked off their Nigeria Professional Premier League title defence with a 1-1 draw against 10-man Rivers United of Port Harcourt in the 2025/2026 league opener at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta, on Friday.
Aniekeme
Okon shot the visitors ahead in the third minute when he headed past goalkeeper
Serge Obassa. However, Victor Mbaoma made a goal scoring return to the Sky Blue
Stars when he leveled scores six minutes later to rescue his side a point in the
keenly contested match.
The Sky Blue
Stars pressed forward in search of a winner, with opportunities falling to
their forwards, but they failed to convert.
Rivers
United held firm until a late setback saw defender Temple Emekayi sent off for
dangerous play, forcing the visitors to finish the match with ten men.
The MKO
Abiola Sports Complex serves as a temporary home for Remo Stars while
renovation work continues at their Ikenne base.
Speaking at
the post-match briefing, Remo Stars coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, who administered
his 100th game for the team, said he was grateful for the draw.
“Yes, I was
hoping to win this match being my 100th game in charge of this team, but a draw
is fair enough. We definitely miss our familiar terrain, our supporters and the
atmosphere at Ikenne, but that is not an excuse for the draw,” Ogunmodede said.
