El
Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri have emerged winners of this year’s North East Pre
-season competition after defeating Gombe United 2-1 in the final match played
at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe State on Thursday. Goals
from new signing, Efe Yarhere and club’s attacking midfielder, Samuel Mathias
was all Borno Army needed to lift the trophy as Fabassou Djoufou scored Gombe
United’s only goal of the encounter via penalty kick.
The
tournament featured four teams from the region which included Wikki Tourists,
Gombe United, El Kanemi Warriors and Doma United.
Before
today’s final, El Kanemi Warriors had garnered four points from three matches
played.
The
coach Ladan Bosso tutored-side on Tuesday evening defeated Wikki Tourists of
Bauchi by 2-1 to set up a final clash against Gombe United who thrashed Doma
United in the second semi final played on Wednesday.
Mathias
Samuel’s brace gave the Borno Army victory in the match against Wikki
Tourists. Meanwhile, the club’s
attacking midfielder opened scoring with his fine header in the 40th minute
before his well-taken free kick in the 65th gave the team the all-important
three points in the match. Super sub Gift Atiluwa gave Wikki Tourists a
consolatory goal in the 80th minute.
