Raymond King is dead

Former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Raymond King has passed away, aged 52.

He died on Monday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) after a brief illness.

King was last week reported to be down with partial stroke and memory loss, and was initially admitted at the Ogun State General hospital Ijaye, Abeokuta.

He was subsequently taken to the General hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos for further treatment but he was transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where he breathed his last.

King graduated into the Flying Eagles of the 1979/80 set after his scintillating performances while playing school football across the South West states of Nigeria. He made his name playing for the Shooting Stars of Ibadan and was in goal during the team’s 1984 campaign for the then CAF African Cup of Champions where the team finished as runners-up to Zamalek of Egypt.

He later left the Shooting Stars and joined the defunct Abiola Babes of Abeokuta with whom he won the 1987 FA Cup title.
