Nigeria’s
Super Falcons secured qualification to the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019
on penalties after a goalless extra-time draw with Cameroon in Tuesday’s first
semi-final at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2018.
Though
Cameroon had more possession and created more chances than their opponents, a
120 minutes of action was unable to separate both sides at the Accra Sports
Stadium in Ghana’s capital. That meant a penalty shoot-out was required to
determine who makes Saturday’s final and lands Africa’s first qualification
spot for France 2019.
In the
shoot-out, it was the S
uper Falcons that held their nerve by converting all
four of their spot-kicks, while Cameroon were decisively unsuccessful from the
penalty spot twice. Ngozi Ebere struck the winning penalty to ensure Nigeria’s
return to the world finals with a 4-2 shoot-out win.
This will be
Nigeria’s eighth consecutive appearance at a Women’s World Cup, having played
in all seven previous editions of the competition, going back to the inaugural
tournament in 1991.
