Former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has said that the last Group D encounter between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Albiceleste of Argentina at the Russia FIFA World Cup would be an epic clash, Sportinlens.blogspot.com reports.
Nigeria will
engage Argentina in the last group D match on Jun 26 at the Saint Petersburg
Stadium. The 2018 game will be the fifth time Nigeria would be drawn in the
same group with Argentina at the FIFA World Cup after USA ’94, Japan/Korea ’2002,
South Africa ’2010 and Brazil ’2014.
Although,
Argentina triumphed in the last four meetings but Eguavoen believes that the
Albacete will play to revenge their 4-2 defeat to Eagles in the friendly
encounter last month.
The former
Super Eagles defender, who was part of the Nigeria squad at the FIFA World Cup
at the USA ’94 and France ’98 respectively, charged Super Eagles coach Gernot
Rohr to adopt tactics that will give his team results against their opponents.
“The tactics
and strategies the coach would be adopted will be very important. He has
already known the country we are going to play in the group. Talking about
Argentina, it is now or never. Player like Messi, this might be his last World
Cup; Higuain as well. It is not going to be easy having beaten them recently in
a friendly encounter, they will come out to revenge but the good thing is that
we are not playing them first. We must prepare well for the first game against
Croatia, a win or draw will be okay but we must not lose the game because the
first game is very important,” Eguavoen said.
Asked about
the Nigeria chances to qualify from the group, he added: “Fear factor is out of
it because we have players that are playing in England and in European leagues.
We must have young players that can run for minutes. I am not craving for
(Ahmed) Musa to be in the starting lineup but we must have players that can be
fast with the ball. European teams fear our physical appearance too.”
