Football
Association of Zambia (FAZ) on Thursday announced that it had switched to computer-based
ticket sales in line with modern trends in football. FAZ
President Andrew Kamanga said the move was also aimed at improving
accountability and transparency, adding that the new mode of ticketing would
be used for the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria next month.
He said the method was used during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya last weekend.
"The
Kenya match last Sunday was the historic first where fans had to purchase
tickets through Shoprite stalls countrywide and it is expected this mode of
ticket sales shall be used for the upcoming crucial World Cup qualifier against
Nigeria on Oct. 9 in Ndola," he said, according to a statement posted on
the association's website.
He added
that in order to help fans to appreciate the system, the advertising and
marketing of the match will start early, adding that the association had
started implementing measures aimed at maximizing revenue.
According to
him, the association identified ticket sales as one area where funds were being
siphoned, adding that the move will put to end previous experiences where fans
were made to stand in queues to buy tickets, a move that resulted in stampedes
in some cases.
Zambia
starts her campaign for the 2018 World Cup with a home clash against Nigeria on
Oct. 9. Other teams in Group B are Algeria and Cameroon.
The 2012
Africa Cup winners have failed to qualify for next year's Africa soccer
showpiece after a poor qualifying campaign in which the national team finished
third in group.
