Gombe United Technical Adviser, Aliyu Zubairu has said that the Savannah Scorpions are poised to pick their first away victory on the road, starting with their next game against Nasarawa United on Sunday, Sportinglens,blogspot.com reports.
Zubairu
stated this after his team's hard fought 1-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL)
match day 13 fixture at the Pantami stadium, Gombe over the weekend.
The former
Wikki Tourists manager expressed confidence that his team is capable of winning
away from home, insisting that the Solid Miners are beatable.
With five
matches remaining to end the 2022/2023 season, Zubairu explained further that picking
away points would put his team in contention to retain their league status.
“I can tell you that we've a squad capable of
winning away from home; our performances in away fixtures weren’t that bad - so
far, we have recorded four draws out of six.”
“The officiating in the league has improved tremendously, and if that will continue, I’m very optimistic that before the season wraps up, we'll get a win on the road, and our mission remained the same against Nasarawa United.”
Gombe
United's only goal against El Kanemi Warriors came in the 9th minute when Anayo
Ogbonna confidently and calmly converted a spot kick awarded after Hassan
Abubakar hacked down Umar Ahmed inside their box.
On the
outcome of their match in the northeast derby, Zubairu said: “I’m happy with
the victory because El Kanemi Warriors came into the match with a mission to
pick a point, having won their match day 12 away fixture but they met a solid
and determined side.”
He stated
that El Kanemi Warriors new manager Hamza Abara has turned around the squad, “He
just came in and brought some fresh legs and they're gelling now,” he said.
