Coach Gernot
Rohr has revealed that Super Eagles would engage Akwa United in a training game
in Uyo on May 26 to assess his players as part of preparations for the FIFA
World Cup in Russia next month.
SportingLife
understands that between May 21 to May 27
has been declared as a period for the players going to the World Cup to
rest by FIFA. FIFA rule states that countries are not allowed to play any
official game during the period.
But the
German tactician said the period could be well utilised by featuring some of
the new players in the game.
“Perhaps, we
could do something else in Uyo apart from the Atletico Madrid friendly game. It
could be possible but it is not allowed officially by FIFA, May 21-17, is the
rest week for FIFA and it is not allowed for official game but we could do a
training game on 26 to see some of the players I don’t know. So we could do a
training game against Akwa United on May 26, that is what I have in my mind,”
Rohr said in an interview with SportingLife
He added:
“And on the 27, we will move to Port-Harcourt to play against DR Congo if the
pitch is ready and after the match we will go to Abuja to say hello to the
government that are ready to receive us. Our sponsor and the NFF also want to
host us on the 29th. The following day we travel to England on May 30 for the international
friendly against England,” Rohr concluded.
