Sheriff Tiraspol beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu courtesy of an incredible last minute goal. The Moldovan side are playing in the Champions League group stages for the first time in the history and made their presence felt with a huge upset on Tuesday evening.
They bested the competition's most
decorated club, 13-time champions Real, with midfielder Sebastien Thill
thumping a worldie past Thibaut Courtois and into the top corner to spark some
sensational scenes.
Thill promptly removed his shirt in
celebration and was mobbed by his teammates.
Thill became the first player from
Luxembourg to score in the Champions League and his side were able to see out
the final few minutes to register a memorable victory that moves them onto six
points in Group D.
Jasurbek Yakhshiboev had given the
visitors a surprise lead in the first half before Karim Benzema levelled
matters from the spot with 25 minutes remaining.
But then Thill whacked in a beauty to
give Sheriff one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history.
Thill, 31, was in complete and utter
euphoria - even more so because he has a tattoo featuring the Champions League
trophy in a dream.
Sheriff, whose record signing Marko
Markovski cost a mere €1 million, started their qualifying campaign back in
July and made history when they beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the first matchday.
As of August this year, they had a
lower UEFA club coefficient ranking than both Burnley and Everton.
