Wenger’s first win over Mourinho keeps top-four bid alive

ARSENE WENGER sealed his first proper win over Jose Mourinho as Arsenal beat Manchester United to keep their flagging top-four hopes alive. Goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck were enough to secure victory for Arsenal against a weakened Manchester United at the Emirates.

Arsenal stay in sixth with 63 points from 34 games, while United remain fifth with 65 points from 35 points ahead of their crucial Europa League semi-final second-leg with Celta Vigo on Thursday.

But Liverpool (third, 70 points, 36 games) and Manchester City (fourth, 69 points, 35 games) are the favourites for the last two Champions League spots.

Both Arsenal and Manchester United struggled to impress on a largely frustrating afternoon before Xhaka’s long-range effort deflected off Ander Herrera and lofted past David De Gea.
And three minutes later the Gunners had doubled their lead with Welbeck heading home a great cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The goals were enough for Arsene Wenger to celebrate his first Premier League victory over Jose Mourinho - and first victory in any competition aside from the Community Shield - in 17 matches.
