The chairman
of the League Management Company (LMC) Shehu Dikko has revealed the body’s
plans to starts the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)
season on December 18 and end July 9. The league
boss stated this when he was a guest of the week on a popular social media
group, Nigeria Football Support Platform (NFSP) monitored by
Sportinglens.blogspot.com.
The second
vice-chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) stressed that the
decision to commence the league in December is to enable the body to achieve a
lot of objectives.
Dikko also
noted that the early league kick off will help the clubs going to CAF
competitions play at least 13 matches before the commencement of the tournament
in February 2017.
“As for next
season’s commencement, our target now is to start December 18 and end July 9
while our Super 4 should start December 5-11. We also envisage starting 2018
season by the end of August 2017. All clubs already have the schedule and
planning. We have already sent out a draft schedule to our clubs as we normally
do and once we have our AGM we take off,” Dikko said through the platform.
He added:
“Also to align our calendar to Europe by end of 2017 season, which would be
hugely beneficial for us both in terms of organisation, planning, and even
finances. Get out clubs going to CAF competitions to play at least 13 to 15
games before the start of CAF (tournament) in February 2017. All clubs are back
and planning for next season so I believe we are on track. This is something we
discussed since the last AGM in February before the 2016 season starts.”
