Adegboye Onigbinde, former Super Eagles coach, has warned the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against further waste of time in naming a
substantive coach for the Super Eagles, saying that the country is toying with
Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup.
Onigbinde said that the shortness of time between now and
when Nigeria will start the 2018 World Cup qualifier in October makes it
imperative for a permanent coach to be named in earnest.
“We have coaches, good ones in Nigeria and we are looking at
what may not even work for us. What stops us from continuing with the one who
played two friendly matches and won them?
“But that is not an issue now. The problem is that they (NFF)
are toying with Nigeria’s World Cup qualification with this delay in naming a coach
for the national team. I have been in the system and I know how it works; let
nobody deceive you that we have the luxury of time.
“There is no time between now and the time we will start the
qualifiers for the World Cup. A coach needs to be on ground to start looking at
various areas of the national team he will touch ahead of the match,” he said.
Onigbinde, who has for long clamoured for the development of
a football culture for the country, said that the country might pay dearly if a
coach was not engaged immediatelyfor the team, saying Le Guen’s hiring failed
from the beginning.
“Why should they interview a coach through Skype? That was a
failure and it is not done anywhere. If he can be interviewed through the
social media, then he can coach through the same avenue,” he said.
“We should not do things that will jeopardise our chances of
qualifying for the World Cup,” he warned
