Zesco United
recovered from two goals down to force a 2-2 draw away to Enugu Rangers in the first leg CAF Confederations Cup playoffs at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Nigeria on Sunday.
The reverse
tie comes in a week’s time in Ndola, Zambia with the aggregate winner advancing
to the lucrative group stage.
Enugu, after
a series of dangerous raids and buoyed by a partisan crowed managed to break
the deadlock through Osas Okoro’s 28th minute penalty.
Charles
Helong doubled the lead for the flying antelopes at the stroke of the hour mark
with all pointers to an easy ride for the 2016 Nigerian Champions.
However,
Zesco were not throwing in the towel just yet. Kenyan international defender
David “Calabar” Owino pulled one back – scoring from a corner kick to begin the
fight back.
Patrick
Kongolo, who was debuting for the “team ya ziko” scored the leveler with less
than 20 minutes left on the clock.
Zesco are
known to be a hard nut to crack at home and the Nigerians will have to dig
deeper to advance.
The coach
Zlat’s charges managed a semi-final exit in the CAF Champions League last year
and will be looking to go a step further in the second tier continental club
competition this year.
