The absence
of a Sports Commissioner in Rivers State has started taking its toll on
sporting activities in the State. This follows
the inability of the Rivers State Hockey Association to secure financial
support from the state government for its Male and Female team at the ongoing
Super League in Abuja.
The chairman
of the Rivers State Hockey Association, Arthur Jumbo who made this known in an
interview monitored on Raypower Sports Zone decried the financial crisis facing
the team in Abuja.
"It is
telling on us as we have not had any response from the government, we are just
handling the issue in our way so as not to dampen the enthusiasm of the
players. Permanent Secretary in the Rivers State Sports Ministry, Michael
Nnolim said the file is in the Government house and if it’s truly there, then
his Excellency should come to our aid," Jumbo said.
He appealed
to the State Governor, Nyesom Wike to look into the file of the Hockey Team,
stressing that what they are asking for is not much compared to what football
gets from government.
"We do
not need much compared to what they give to football, so am really begging him
to come bail us from our travails," he said.
Perhaps if there
were to be a Sports Commissioner, the teams {male and female} would have gotten
what was due them, long before they rounded off preparations for the super
league.
Meanwhile
the Rivers State male Hockey team started their campaign at the championship on
a sad note losing one-nil to Kada Stars while
Rivers Queens lost 2-0 to Plateau Queens.
