American
Venus Williams will meet Garbine Murguruza of Spain in Saturday's ladies final
at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London. Williams
defeated Briton Johanna Konta in straight sets, while 2015 runner-up Murguruza
dispatched Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova.
First up on
ladies semi-final day at Wimbledon was Spain's Muguruza up against Slovakia's
Rybarikova.
Murguruza
the 2015 runner-up was the overwhelming favourite coming into this encount er
against the world number 87, and the Spaniard did not disappoint.
With a
double break of her opponent's serve, she raced to a five-love lead in the
opening set, before Rybaikova managed to open her account.
The Slovak
who's made a fairy-tale return to tennis after a seven-month lay-off from the
tour due to injury moving up from world number 453 into the top 100 saved a
bagel but conceded the first set in just 30 minutes.
It was more
one way traffic in the second set as the 2016 French Open champion continued to
dictate proceedings.
Again she
coasted to a four-love lead before her opponent got onto the scoreboard.
But the 14th
seed made no mistake and sealed a comfortable 6-1 6-1 victory in just over an
hour for a berth in Saturday's final where she will take on American veteran
Williams.
Fans on
center-court got more for their money by way of a contest in the second match
between Konta and Williams, but certainly not by the result.
The pair
matched each other toe to toe in the opening set, but it was the five times
champion, making her 20th appearance at Wimbledon, that held the edge.
The 10th
seed broke the Konta serve in the final game to claim the opener. And she
maintained that momentum early in the second set; with another comfortable
break to take a 4-1 lead.
The rest as
they say was a mere formality, as Williams triumphed 6-4 and 6-2 to reach her
ninth final at the All England Club, the first since 2009.
