Nigeria Cup
champions, Akwa United, have sent their Belgian head coach, Maurice Cooreman,
on an indefinite leave.
The decision
by the club followed their one-nil defeat to Enyimba on Sunday night in the
Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on home turf, the Godswill Akpabio
Stadium also known as the Nest of Champions.
A letter
from the office of the club chairman, Paul Bassey, was dispatched to the
Belgian trainer on Monday conveying the message that he should proceed on a
leave with immediate effect.
Cooreman's
assistant, Ere Dokubo, has now been saddled with the responsibility of leading
the coaching crew.
Dokubo and
the other coaches have also been handed a three-game deadline to improve the
club's results "or be fired."
The
caretaker coach and his backroom staff will have to produce results against MFM
FC (away), FC Ifeanyiubah (home) and Giwa FC (away) to keep their jobs.
Akwa United
have dropped eight points at home following losses to Enyimba and Abia Warriors
and a scoreless draw with Warri Wolves, and those results have irked the
management which described the situation as "unacceptable and a dent on
the league title aspirations of the club."
The Promise
Keepers sit in 10th place with 18 points, six behind table-toppers, Enugu
Rangers.
