The
Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom
Wike (CON) has commended players and officials of Nigeria Professional Football
League (NPFL) club, Rivers United following their sparkling 3-1 victory over
Enugu Rangers on Sunday.
A brace from
Bernard Ovoke and a superb long range finish by Christian Weli gave the ‘Pride
of Rivers’ the deserved win over table-topping Enugu Rangers in the exciting
match day 14 clash decided at the Yakubu
Gown Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Governor
Wike praised the team for their continued hard work and determination while
charging them not to rest on their laurels.
“I want to
commend the members of Rivers United for the impressive victory over Enugu
Rangers.
“This is
indeed a job well done.
“For them to
have defeated the current league leaders, it shows that they know what the task
ahead is all about,” Governor Wike said.
While
wishing the team more success, the Governor promised to offset the balance of
financial entitlements owed them by the former administration in Rivers State.
In a related
development, Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Honourable Boma Iyaye has also
joined the chief executive of the State in sending words of commendation to
Rivers United FC.
Honourable
Iyaye who was at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium on Sunday said the team showed great
resolve that exemplifies the true Rivers spirit.
He also
urged the team to keep their eyes on the prize as they seek to achieve set
objectives this season.
“Anyone who
saw that game yesterday will agree with me that we saw the traditional Rivers
spirit in the Rivers United team which gave us that wonderful victory over a
great team like Rangers.
“I am
however urging the team not to relent but continue to work hard and keep their
focus.
“The Rivers
State Government will continue to put player welfare as a top priority as we
look to make Rivers United FC the foremost football club in the country,”
Honourable Iyaye said.
Rivers
United currently occupies the sixth position on the NPFL table with 22 points
from 14 matches.
