All is now
set for match day 1 of the 2016 season of the Nigeria Women Football League
this weekend.
The league
which had doubts of its commencement this month following some controversies
that loomed after some resolutions were met at the April 22nd Annual General
Congress held in Abuja will finally see the lime light on May 21.
NWFL
champions, Rivers Angels will be on the road to Martins White Doves in the city
of Benin as they open their campaign on Sunday May 22.
Technical
Adviser of the Port Harcourt based side, Edwin Okon says his girls are ready
for their season opener.
“I must say
am happy the league is finally kicking off after the long awaited time”.
“As for my
team Rivers Angels, we’re fully prepared for the first match, we will forge
ahead and I believe we’ll do better this year”.
Meanwhile
forward, Chioma Wogu is a doubt for this weekend’s game after she picked up a
knock while featuring for the Super Falcons during the African Women Cup of
Nations qualifying games against the Teranga Lionesses of Senegal last month.
Players
like, Ibinabo Georgewill, Juliet Bassey, Ugo Okadike and Grace Henry are also a
doubt.
Okon however
believes the absence of these players will not affect his team’s performance on
the day.
“We
registered 35 players, though having many injuries, this very match is a very
serious one cos it’s an opening match, so we won’t let injuries affect the
team”.
“We will try as much as we can to see how we
can build up others so as to fill in the positions of those that are not
there”.
Captain of
the side, Charity John says she is prepared to lead her teammates to victory.
“We’ve been
training hard for this game being our first match, we know we’ll win”.
“Despite not
being their captain before now, I have been leading the team and I am sure I
can carry them along with that same spirit and am sure we’ll come out strong”.
