The insinuation
that Akwa United will underrate Ikorodu United in tomorrow’s (Wednesday March 15)
reschedule Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match at the Godswill
Akpabio International Stadium Uyo has been debunked.
According to
a release issued by the club’s Media Officer Uwem Ekoh, the chairman of the
club Paul Bassey told the players after their last training session today that
they should underrate Ikorodu at their own peril.
“News of
their lack of motivation and even thrashing at the hands of Ifeanyi Ubah has
nothing to do with us. You should come out tomorrow with determination to win
and win well," Bassey said to the players.
He further
told them that the Executive Governor of the State His Excellency Udom Emmanuel
is delighted with the progress the team is making so far.
"We
have to continue to keep him happy. So far he has given us all we needed to
succeed and we have to play our part and reciprocate his fatherly gesture,"
he said.
The players though
captain Otobong Effiong promised to live up to expectations.
Coach
Maurice Cooreman whose last port of call was Ikorodu United when he led them to
the elite division said he relishes the challenges of playing against his
former wards.
Apart from a
slight knee knock suffered by Emmanuel Chiegozie and a fever condition reported
by Kufre Ebong, the team is fit and raring to go.
Akwa's next
match will be against Rangers International in Enugu over the weekend.
