Al-Merrikh SC of Sudan prevented fans, journalist from
watching its training session at the Warri Stadium on Saturday evening ahead
of Sunday CAF Champions League first round first leg encounter.
It was gathered that Al-Merrikh did not notify their host
their plans to hold the training behind closed doors.
The Sudanese side after been escorted into the stadium by the
security personnel demanded that everybody inside the stadium should go out.
Those ordered out of the stadium include the officials of
Warri Wolves, fans, journalist as well as security personnel.
It is understood that the decision did not go down well with
Warri Wolves management, describing Al-Merrikh action as embarrassing.
Warri Wolves media officer, Azuka Chiemeka said they were
surprised with the decision.
"We don't know whether this is allowed in the CAF
competition. Even the security personnel who supposed to protect them were sent
out. The journalist and fans were denied the chance to watch their training.
This is embarrassing to us because they did not tell us in their letter that
they want their training behind closed doors. We will raise the issue at our
pre-match meeting," Chiemeka said to SportingLens.blogspot.com.ng
Players and officials of Al-Merrikh arrived in Nigeria by 2pm
on Thursday aboard Egypt Airline.
Al-Merrikh is a Sudanese football club based in
Omdurman Sudan and is one of the oldest football clubs in Africa. It has won
the Sudanese premier league title 19 times and winners of Sudan cup 24 times.
Al-Merrikh was the winner of the first official cup in Sudan
in 1943.
