Nigeria senior basketball men's team, D'Tigers have been drawn alongside host Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Lithuania in Group B of the Men’s Basketball event of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The draw ceremony for the basketball event (Men and Women) of the Olympic Games held on Friday 11 March at the House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland, saw twelve (12) teams in each tournament divided into two (2) groups (A and B) of six (6) teams each.
United State of America (USA), Venezuela, China, Australia are drawn in Group A.
The remaining country in Group A and two others in Group B will be known as three (3) more teams will qualify through the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs) taking place in Belgrade (Serbia), Manila (Philippines) and Turin (Italy) from 4-10 July.
Nigeria qualified directly for the 2016 Rio Olympics after winning their first ever FIBA Afrobasket Championship in Tunisia, last year.
The African champions competed at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. They finished the group play with a 1–4 record, with their victory coming against Tunisia, the first ever Olympic victory.
Meanwhile, the women’s draw saw Japan, Brazil, Australia drawn in Group A, while USA were pitted against Canada, Senegal, Serbia are in Group B.
The senior national women basketball team, D’Tigress, will be seek to pick one of the five slots when they campaign in Group C alongside Belarus and South Korea at the 2016 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT) which will hold in Nantes, France from June 13 to June 19.
Basketball at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be held from 6 to 21 August 2016. The preliminary and knockout matches for both men and women will be played inside the first hall of the Olympic Training Center in Olympic Park which seats up to 16,000 spectators.
